Overview of EAI

The enterprise information architecture necessarily consists of various systems and applications. Self-developed applications and various packaged applications(ERP, CRM, SCM, PLM, MES, WMS, etc.) are involved in the supply chain of enterprises, manage employee information and implement business processes. However, each of these systems and applications need to work organically and exchange the data with each other in order for an enterprise to operate. EAI(Enterprise Application Integration) refers to the concept of managing the transaction networks that integrate various systems and applications within an enterprise and form the basis of relationships among various applications and business processes.

EAI architecture

EAI includes some elements that should be essentially retained because it needs to provide common basis for linkage between systems and applications in corporations. These elements are the messaging middleware that delivers the data, adapter that functions as contact points with various targets of linkage, data transformer that processes and converts the data as required by the targets of linkage, business workflow for automation of business processes, and monitoring function to track the data flow and failure

  • Messaging MiddlewareThe Messaging Middleware is commonly used as the foundation software that ensures safe transmission of all data of Messaging Middleware EAI and assures the stability, performance, etc.
  • AdaptersIt is a software module for connecting with heterogeneous systems such as adapter packaged application or mainframe. It is positioned between software and platform, and is responsible for the interface of data mediation and application synchronization. Companies providing EAI solutions offer the Adapter solutions for various packaged applications and systems.
  • Data BrokerData used in different business environments or data used in systems such as mainframes need to be converted according to the difference in data format or data level required. It automatically converts and transmits the data which are mediated between applications.
  • Business WorkflowIt is a part that can define and manage the flow of each task according to certain point or event, along with the exchange of data between business workflow systems/applications, and define from where to work. It can also automate business processes.

Expected effect of EAI

EAI, an integrated solution for internal and external information, is taking on an added importance amid drastic changes in business environment, such as rapid changes of corporations including quick business process, acquisition, merger, restructuring and spinoff, system expansion, application expansion or upgrade in the wake of introduction of new technologies, and growing need for building the 24-hour operating system to keep pace with globalization, etc.

Cost perspective

  • Gartner Group's research report indicated that the cost of developing the linkage interface in a company with EAI was only one-third of the cost of existing development and that the cost of maintenance arising from changes in business requirements could be reduced by two-thirds.
